California 2014 – day 2
A long but fabulous day starting in pacific Beach, San Diego, picking Gordon up in Anaheim and driving to Palm Springs.
Pacific Beach has a (concrete!) boardwalk with the beach on one side and restaurants, shops and condos lining the other side. The walk north climbs up from the beach and there are periodic wooden walkways and steps down to the beach.
It is a warm, sunny Saturday morning and the whole populace is out biking, skating, walking, jogging. The pets are out too, with tiny lapdogs being carried in cycle baskets and even one cat out on a lead. Any green space is occupied with sunbathers, people sitting chatting or hula hooping. It is exactly as you imagine a California beach.
The ocean is very dramatic with huge rollers roaring onto the beach. A few are surfing, an even fewer are swimming. At their height the breakers are touching the underside of the wonderful old wooden-built Crystal Pier. It is built on wooden posts and has very pretty white lap board style holiday chalets on each side. The local micro-brewery brews a Crystal Pier Pale Ale which even tastes as if some hops were used in the brewing process!
The drive to Anaheim on I5 is thankfully uneventful and I arrive only 30 mins late to meet Gordon. Then we join the relentless LA traffic heading for the mountains, the desert and Palm Springs.
